New Project

The project focuses on British slavery as a whole but centres on Hertfordshire. 40 Acres and a Mule follows on from Hidden Histories, a project undertaken by Hertfordshire archives library in 2007. The project is young people driven, and it details how young people see and understand slavery. The project looks at the different relationships between slaves and slave masters. This will be done by studying how slaves lived during 1660-1800 period and the duress they were under while they worked for their slave masters.

The project runs out of Mrs Howard Hall until March 2009 and you can get involved in so many ways.

  • Video: Recording and editing of project sessions, visits, music recording, art
  • Film: Viewing of slavery related films e.g. Roots (series), Amistad etc
  • Music:  Creating music around the project findings and ideas
  • Art: Documenting the project through art
  • Archive Research: At the Hertfordshire archive library, on the internet etc
  • External Visits: Visits to Hertford and Liverpool

This is an exciting opportunity for young people from Letchworth and surrounding areas to give an insight into their understanding of a pivotal period in the UK and Worlds history

The project is funded and supported by Heritage Lottery Fund and it gives a young persons viewpoint of slavery
